Golf is a sport that many Americans take seriously: the sport takes up more hours every year than other sports, such as fishing, hiking, yoga or even playing basketball. You've invested a lot of time into playing golf yourself, not to mention the money you've spent on equipment.

Your most prized golfing accessory is your electric golf cart, and you want to keep the equipment in reliable condition for as long as you own it. When winter hits and you aren't on the course anymore, you want to make your vehicle as winter-ready as you can. Here are winter care tips for your electric golf cart.

Have a Storage Location Ready

The best way to store your golf cart is to choose a location that is dry, warm and spacious. Speak to your golf cart dealer for suggestions for winter storage and consider the following as well:

  • Your covered garage
  • A rented storage unit
  • A covered carport
Before placing your golf cart in storage, make sure the storage space you use is free of moisture, insects, rodents and allow for enough room to house your unit without it getting scratched or bumped into by other items. Also, make sure to follow the following tips for winterizing your equipment:

Charge the Battery

To keep your electric golf cart's battery in prime condition during months of non-use, charge its battery fully prior to placing it in storage. For healthy battery performance all golfing season, charge the battery completely after each use.

Fill the Tires

Temperatures affect the air pressure in your electric golf cart's tires. In the summer the rubber in your tires expands, and in the winter it constricts. This means you need to inflate your tires in the winter prior to storage to ensure they are at the right PSI.

As a general rule, for every 10 degrees temperatures drop change, the PSI in your golf cart's tires change as well. You may need to inflate your tires several times while the unit is in storage to keep them properly inflated. Your golf cart specialist can help you determine what pressure is best for your tires.

Clean the Unit

Use a damp rag to wipe down the entire interior of your electric golf cart, paying close attention to the crevices where the backrests meet the seats. Vacuum under the seats and near the gears to clean out dust and debris.

If you have rain closures on your golf cart, wipe them down as well then leave them partially zipped up. You want to keep the unit ventilated without fully exposing your golf cart to the elements.

A small amount of soap and water with a soft rag will clean the exterior of your golf cart, including the tires, mirrors, and windshield. When your equipment is fully cleaned, allow it to dry in the sun or use a clean and dry rag to wipe away all moisture before placing your golf cart in storage.

It's wise to place an old piece of carpeting or blanket in the location where you wish to store your golf cart so you can protect the tires from resting on a hard surface. Check your golf cart frequently, starting it now and again during the cooler seasons to ensure the battery is still charged.

Your electric golf cart specialist will assist you in keeping your equipment in its best condition when you are not using it. If you have any problems with your golf cart, take it in for serving straight away. For all your golf cart accessory needs, contact us at Sierra Golf Carts & Auto for assistance.
